Wide angle photography can make a large scene feel deep and immersive. It can also shrink the main subject, stretch the edges, and pull clutter into the frame. The fix is not always a wider focal length. You need to control where you stand, what fills the foreground, and what stays outside the picture.
This guide explains how wide-angle lenses change a scene and gives you a simple field process for using a wide angle lens on purpose.
A wide angle lens shows a broader angle of view and strengthens the apparent size difference between near and distant objects. When you get close to a rock, flower, person, or doorway, it looks large while the background seems smaller and farther away. This can create a stronger sense of depth and a unique perspective.
The lens does not change perspective by itself. Your camera position does. A shorter focal length often makes the photographer step closer to keep the subject large. That closer position can exaggerate the size of foreground objects and create the stronger near-to-far effect.

On a full-frame camera, 24 mm gives a wide view, while 35 mm offers a more moderate wide-angle perspective. On a 1.5 crop APS-C camera, 16 mm gives a similar field of view. Nikon and other camera makers label comparable lenses differently, so compare the effective focal length. A phone’s ultra-wide camera can be much broader, but its strong edge stretching needs careful framing.

When using a wide-angle lens, choose a foreground that has shape, texture, direction, or a clear relationship to the main subject. Objects in the foreground should lead the eye rather than compete with the main subject. Then use the middle ground to connect it to the background.
Move in small steps. A shift of a few centimetres can separate overlapping objects, clean a corner, or change where a leading line enters the frame. Lowering the camera gives the foreground more space. Raising it can reveal separation between layers.

Settings support the composition, but they cannot rescue a weak one. For a daylight landscape, f/8 is a practical starting point. This aperture and a tripod work best when you need depth of field and precise framing. Check both the nearest important detail and the background, then adjust the focus point or aperture if either looks soft.
Stopping down to f/11 adds depth of field, though tiny apertures can soften fine detail through diffraction. If the foreground sits close to the lens, one frame may not have everything in focus. Focus stacking can help when the subject and conditions stay still.
Use shutter speed to protect moving details. Wind-blown leaves, waves, grasses, and people can blur even when the camera is on a tripod. Raise ISO when needed rather than accepting motion blur you do not want.
Also check for flare when a bright light sits in or near the frame. Shade the lens, clean the front element, or shift your position. Review the corners at high magnification before leaving the scene.
A longer lens is often better when the strongest subject is far away or the scene feels crowded. A telephoto lens narrows the view, makes background elements more prominent in the frame, and can compress the apparent distance between layers.
Do not use wide angle photography as the default for every landscape. Use it when close and distant elements work together. Switch lenses when you need to simplify layers or enlarge a distant subject. A normal or telephoto view can also keep people looking natural across the frame.
Wide angle photography works best when every part of the frame has a job. Choose the subject first, move close only when the foreground adds value, and check the edges before you shoot. If the background becomes too small or the frame stays busy, use a longer lens.
