Nestled at the top of Elk Fall Provincial Park is a lesser known waterfall called Deer Falls. A picturesque waterfall, surrounded by evergreen forests with an emerald pool at the bottom. Deer falls is a perfect location to take out the camera.

If I’m being honest, I didn’t know it was a waterfall! From the viewing area, it looks like the run-off from the John Hart Dam.

About Deer Fall in Elk Fall Park

Elk Falls and Moose Falls were named before the construction of the John Hart Dam on the Campbell River. When the dam was built, the flow of the Campbell River through the Elk Falls canyon decreased, revelling Deer Falls. It is believed the falls where completely underwater until that time. Therefore Deer Falls gained recognition and acquired its name after the implementation of the John Hart Dam in 1948.

Getting to Deer Falls

At the time of writing this post the John Hart Dam was under construction and access to the closest parking lot was closed. Before you head out check the local listing. But I can give you an alternative route to the Deer falls.

Head west on Campbell River Rd/Gold River Hwy/BC-28 W toward John Hart Rd
Turn right onto Brewster Lake Rd
Turn right onto Elk Falls upper parking lot.

The Elk Falls Suspension Bridge is a breathtaking sight and is the highlight of Elk Falls Provincial Park. You’ll witness the raging
river below and the stunning waterfalls that cascade into it. The hike to the bridge is an easy 3.5 km loop and can take around 1–2 hours to complete, depending on your pace. If you’re a camping enthusiast, this park offers excellent camping facilities for tents or RVs.
